Responsible Care®

Pioneering our industry’s progress in sustainability

Huntsman has been a leader in chemical manufacturing for decades. We’re a founding member of Responsible Care®, the industry’s environmental, health, safety and security performance initiative. This program helps member companies elevate the safety of their employees, support local communities and protect the environment all while enhancing performance.

Championing a worldwide movement

Championed by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), Responsible Care® is licensed by ICCA to the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and other national chemical associations. ACC represents U.S. companies in the chemical industry, including Huntsman. Our CEO Peter Huntsman is a board officer for ACC. We’re proud to help promote chemistry’s role in making global manufacturing more sustainable and in encouraging innovations that make the world a better and safer place.

Our leadership in sustainability extends even further through our partnerships with the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), the Indian Chemistry Council (ICC) and the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF).

Product Stewardship

Safer products, better business, everyone’s responsibility

At Huntsman, product stewardship is an integrated process for identifying, managing and minimizing the environmental, health and safety impacts at every stage of a product’s life cycle. Our commitment to safer and sustainable products enhances public confidence, keeps our customers and consumers safe, and ensures our reputation as a responsible and sustainable company.

Huntsman safety data sheets (SDSs) are available in multiple languages and accessible to all registered Huntsman customers on Huntsman’s online service portal. We offer our customers training on Huntsman’s product stewardship as well as in-depth training on safety data sheets, regulatory compliance and safe use of products in customer applications.

Customers can access product safety information through multiple channels, including:

  • Sales contacts
  • Division-specific online service portals, such as Texnet for Textile Effects
  • Contact links on Huntsman.com
    • Use the drop-down in “Type” to submit the SDS request for each division

Huntsman associates are trained on product safety relevant to their roles and responsibilities. Designated product stewards are equipped to train associates, customers, distributors and transporters.

Product Safety Summaries

As part of our commitment to product stewardship, we publish product safety summaries that provide a general description of certain chemical substances. Publishing product safety summaries is one of the targets set forth in our Horizon 2025 strategy for environment, health, and safety, which is aligned with the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® initiative. The product safety summaries are not intended to replace the information included on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Product Safety Label, and other safe use and handling literature for the chemical substances. We also support the ACC's publication of product safety information on its website, www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org.

Emergency Response Planning (ERP)

Emergency Response Planning (ERP)

We take our responsibility seriously to provide our internal and external stakeholders with a safe and secure environment. Our emergency preparedness and response plans ensure our facilities are ready to respond to foreseeable emergencies that might potentially impact our employees, the public or the environment. Every Huntsman facility is required to develop and implement written emergency preparedness and response plans and regularly self-audit them. At an enterprise level, we audit these plans every five years.

This process applies to Huntsman-owned or -operated facilities – including manufacturing sites, advanced technology and R&D centers, and key business locations. It typically does not apply to joint ventures in which we are a minority owner, or to third-party warehouses and tollers, unless specifically requested. Our facilities develop ERPs, train employees on plan requirements, and share our plans with local emergency responders. We conduct drills annually and include community organizations where appropriate.

As a part of corporate crisis planning, corporate communications teams may be set up in the event of an incident that may require community outreach. Sites designate a contact to communicate with the community during an emergency.

Contractor Safety

Contractor Safety

Huntsman’s vision is to prevent all harm through achieving excellence in environmental, health, and safety (EHS) performance in all aspects of our business. Similar to our requirements for our own managers and employees, we ensure that our contractors are aware of our EHS mission, policy and vision and have been trained in their specific responsibilities for achieving EHS excellence. Through our EHS procedures, we check that our contractors have a robust EHS Management System and the competency and training to complete the job safely.

  • Contractor companies must be on an approved contractor list in order to place a bid on any work within our facilities. Approved contractors are those whose EHS programs and performance have been evaluated and meet Huntsman standards.
  • While work is ongoing, we review contractor performance on the job to ensure the work is completed safely, and we work with our contractors to correct any potential issues.
  • Finally, we review past contractor performance on a routine basis to strengthen a safe operating partnership.

A number of elements of our EHS Management System help safeguard our contractors, employees, distributors, customers and the public. These include: our commitment to the guiding principles of Responsible Care®; proactive communication of environmental, health and safety performance information regarding our operations and products; and identifying hazards and applying risk assessment and risk management processes to identify and control EHS risks in all aspects of our business activity.
